It is not to be confused with Osmanthus Oolong, as the floral scent of Osmanthus-scented Dancong is naturally formed and not achieved through scenting with osmanthus flowers. Tea names such as Zhimao and Jilongkan belong to the Osmanthus-scented Dancong fragrance type.

āćStory·ZimaoćIn the early Qing Dynasty, there was a temple on Wudong Mountain covered with thatch, which was very popular with worshippers. A passing scholar, seeing this scene, named the temple "Thatched Temple." However, because few people could read at the time, they mispronounced these two characters as "Temple Thatch." Later, since the pronunciation of "temple" is similar to the Chaozhou dialect word for "character," the place was corrected to "Character Thatch." The monks in the temple planted tea trees, and they dried the harvested tea leaves under osmanthus trees, undergoing processes like "greening," "rolling," and "baking," to produce a fragrant tea with a mellow taste. The finished tea, when brewed in the temple, released a natural osmanthus fragrance. Besides being used for offering to the Buddha and for personal drinking, the tea was also served to visitors who came to worship, hence it was called "Simao" Dan Cong tea or "Zimao" tea.
